Calling all groomsmen and bridesmaids... It’s time to decorate the getaway car. It’s fun and it falls on the wedding party to plan. It’s a tradition that absolutely must be followed. Have everything ready before hand and make sure you do it as secretly as possible at the reception.
Timing is crucial when decorating the happy couple’s wedding car. You want to get out there before they’re ready to leave so no one sees you. It’s supposed to be a surprise, albeit expected much of the time. And you want to be finished before anyone comes out of the reception so you don’t hold the couple up.
If you’re part of the secret, you’ll want to get your supplies and ideas ready long before the reception. Think about today’s couples. Many in the city do not own a car, so you’re going to have to ask the limo driver if it’s ok to decorate the car. You may or may not be allowed. If the couple has their own car, be sure you decorate the right one! They may be leaving their second car for someone else to drive to their home while they take off.
Your ideas may be grand, but you have to think practically too. Don’t even consider using things that will damage the car. Especially if the couple has just purchased a new car, you may aggravate them rather then send them off laughing. You know your groom and bride. How do they react to someone touching their car? If they’re more of a hands-off couple, opt for a few streamers tied to the antenna. Or fill the entire back seat with balloons.
If you have the green light to decorate, use non caustic materials. You never want to use food like icing, whipped cream, or anything containing sugar which could eat at the car’s paint. And stick to the windows. Never put anything on the actual body of the car, especially masking tape or duct tape. You may end up having to pay for a new paint job.
Some states have made it illegal to tie tin cans to the back of a car. The risk of the metal sparking and causing and explosion seems to be the reason behind the law. So think about what else you might trail off the car. You can always use flowers, a chain of garter belts, a wedding veil made of cheap tulle or other festive paper elements. If there was a theme to the wedding, carry the theme through for the send off.
You can use soap or better yet window markers especially made to write on glass. The writing will come off easily at a car wash and no one will be peeved. Write funny sentiments or just do the traditional, “Just Married” which has always worked well. The more festive you make the car, the more people will honk and cheer as they drive down the street to their honeymoon suite.
The idea is to get it all done without the bride and groom knowing. So choose a time near the middle of the reception when the bride and groom are busy and not likely to come out and check on anything outside. Don’t wait until the last minute to complete this silly task!
